This sounds simple. It is, mathematically. But most retail traders never do it. They buy a round number of shares ("I'll take 100 shares") or invest a fixed dollar amount ("I'll put $1,000 in this"). The Formula

Position Size = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ Risk per Unit

Example: You have a $10,000 account. You're willing to risk 1% on this trade ($100). Your entry is at $50 and your stop loss is at $47 — a $3 risk per share.

Position Size = ($10,000 × 1%) ÷ $3 = $100 ÷ $3 = 33 shares

If you buy 33 shares and the stock drops to $47 (your stop loss), you lose $99 — approximately 1% of your account. Exactly what you planned.

How Market Structure Defines Your Stop Loss

The formula above requires a stop loss price. Where you place that stop loss determines your risk per unit — and therefore your position size. This is where market structure becomes critical.

A stop loss placed arbitrarily (say, "5% below my entry") may have no relationship to how the asset actually trades. A market-structure-based stop loss is placed at the last significant low — the level where, if the price breaks below it, the bullish case for the trade is invalidated.

The risk percentage in the formula is a choice — but it's not an arbitrary one. Professional risk management standards recommend risking between 0.5% and 2% per trade for most retail accounts.

Here's why that range matters mathematically. If you risk 1% per trade and have a losing streak of 10 consecutive trades (which happens to every trader), your account drops by roughly 9.6% — painful, but recoverable. If you risk 5% per trade and lose 10 in a row, your account drops by 40% — much harder to recover from, and psychologically devastating.

Staying within the 0.5%–2% range is not being conservative. It's giving your strategy the statistical sample size it needs to prove itself without being destroyed by short-term variance.

For stocks and cryptocurrencies, position sizing is calculated directly in shares or coins. The formula above applies directly. The entry is typically set slightly above the breakout level (0.1% above the previous high), and the stop loss is set slightly below the last significant low (0.5% below).

In Forex, position size is expressed in lots. A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. For Major pairs quoted in USD (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), one pip (0.0001) equals $10 per standard lot. The calculation accounts for the pip value to translate price movement into dollar risk.
